We had a hard time naming this Connections page, because we didn't want to scare everybody away with techno-speak. Our first title, quickly squashed, was "Databases You'll Love." Why'd we throw that one out? Because the term database sounds very stuffy and complicated and cold and technological, distant from children and all the individuals and organizations concerned with their welfare.

But in our work in the disability and educational fields, NICHCY can vouch for the usefulness of a database. It's a library, resource collection, and piles of paper listing items of interest, all rolled into one. A marvel of technology, a database is a great way to store and organize information. When placed on the Web and equipped with a well-designed search engine, a database allows users to search for and retrieve the information of their choice.

So---a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Those cold, heartless systems actually spill forth Info Galore (hence, our title for this Connections page). Happily, the world is full of "info galores," including NICHCY's own "Search for Info" services. (May we confess that we have databases behind the curtain?) We thought you might like to connect with them, as suits your needs, interests, and concerns. You might run from the term database, but you'll love the info that one can give you.

This A-Z Topics page connecting you to online databases isn't intended to be exhaustive of the resources available. We'll be adding to this page as we learn of more, and as more become available. You may wish to check back every now and again to see what's new! New entries will be marked with a New or revised publication.

Help with Specific Disabilities

There are quite a few databases online regarding specific disabilities---and much more information about specific disabilities that isn't in a database! Rather than create a list here that never ends, we strongly recommend that you use these NICHCY resources, all of which are designed to connect you quickly to disability-specific organizations and information. We also recommend these other resources, if you're interested in locating the type of assistance noted.

Help within the TA&D Network

The TA&D Network stands for the Technical Assistance and Dissemination network of projects funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) at the U.S. Department of Education. This is a network of approximately 40 projects concerned with various aspects of educational and other services to children with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education (IDEA) Act, our nation's special education law. Each center has a particular focus or field of endeavor. Some maintain databases that you can search online for various types of information, as indicated below.
